FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is telenurse licensing?
To adequately care for patients via telehealth, telemedicine, and virtual nursing platforms, registered nurses and nurse practitioners need to hold state nursing licenses and the authority to practice in more than one state. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) specifies that nurses must have the correct licensure for the state where the patient is while they are doing telehealth, no matter where the nurse is working from. Telenurse licensure involves licenses for registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), and nurse practitioners (NPs) who may write prescriptions via telehealth, and follow the standards imposed by each state for telehealth.
The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) decides which states a nurse requires a specific license for. Registered nurses having a compact license from their home state may practice telemedicine in all other NLC partner states, which officially includes forty states. But nurses who want to provide virtual services to patients in states that are not part of the agreement need to seek separate licenses from each state. For instance, a nurse with a compact license in Texas may deliver telehealth to patients in Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona (all compact states) without having any further licenses. But to work with patients in California, New York, or Massachusetts (non-compact states), the nurse would need to secure a separate license for each one. For nurse practitioners, circumstances are considerably more complex.
Telehealth nurse practitioners need to complete both the fundamental criteria for a nursing license and the advanced practice standards that are specific to each state. Nurse practitioners must first have either an Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact home state license, which grants them multi-state APRN privileges in compact states, or separate APRN licenses for each state where they offer telehealth services. In addition to holding an APRN license, nurse practitioners must also receive written authority in each state if they wish to prescribe drugs over telemedicine. Our nurse practitioner telehealth licensure procedure includes all these areas: APRN license, prescription authority, scope of practice proof, and strictly meeting the Telehealth Nursing Practice Standards in every area where you engage with patients.
Checking your telenurse license entails making sure that you have a valid license in every jurisdiction where you offer virtual patient care. Nursys® is the most common way to check licensing status. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) administers it, while the State Boards of Nursing may opt to use it to check licenses in real time. Nurse practitioners must present verification of both their RN and APRN licenses in any state where they operate. We provide online nursing telehealth license services that guarantee continuous compliance. Our offerings include thorough verification documentation, official correspondence request from State Boards of Nursing, Nursys® verification reports, DEA license checks, and ongoing monitoring of license status in all practice states. This helps prevent any disruptions in telehealth practice.
